Drawings and Sketches

These are some sketches and drawings that I dug out of my old notebooks. Some are recent and others are from when I was only 15 (in 2002.) These aren’t really commissioned portraits, just things I drew of friends and family, pictures out of magazines, Mom’s old book of actresses as well as some live poses from figure drawing or college classes. Enjoy!

“Abandoned Autumn”

This painting is a few years old, but I never had the chance to get a good photo doc of it until now. Just in time for autumn, my favorite time of year!

“Warts and All”

This is my second sculpture/painting. “Warts and All” (31×27″) is similar to “Frog Eye” but with the 3-D element of “Charming” I used Magi-sculpt and sand to create the textures and the dome shape of the eye. Then I used metallic paint on the body and a combination of metallic paint and gold-leaf on the eye. A layer of high gloss acrylic gel medium on the eye was my final touch.

New Life

Hi, everybody! I have some good news and BIG changes that have set my life and art on a new course. First of all, one June 29th 2013 I was married to the love of my life and Quagliato was officially changed to Miller (yeah, big change). But don’t worry, it won’t effect the name of my business and I will still sign my maiden name on the art work. The second change is my husband and I recently moved to Los Angeles so that he could attend USC for Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television (yeah, he’s super talented too). Since my art tends to reflect my perspective on the environment that I find myself submerged in, than look for the influence of the “Big City” on my art. Yeah, I told you they were BIG changes. So if you hear about a Lena Miller making it big in the art scene of LA, that’s me! ha, ha. It should be an interesting ride.

“Charming”

This is my latest painting, titled Charming. Not only does it have dimensional texture and real fresh-water pearls embedded in the surface, but the dragon’s arm is hinged at the elbow and shoulder and the girls arm pivots at the shoulder. Controlled by a piece of fishing-line that runs between the front and back panel, the girl and dragon’s arms move simultaneously when the viewer pulls a tassel that hangs from the bottom of the painting (not in picture) When released, everything is pulled back into position by a counterweight stone, which also hangs from the bottom of the painting.

Brer Rabbit Series

This is a three-part series based on the stories of Brer Rabbit. Each one has the short story, which it is based on, scribbled into the background as texture. The Brer Rabbit that we grew up knowing was clever and funny, but seldom do we hear of the original stories that did not make it into the modern children’s books because of their violent themes. Many of the animal characters never lived to see “happily ever after.” Perhaps you know these stories well, or perhaps you would like to check them out from the library to meet the REAL Brer Rabbit!

“The Man with the Alpaca Felt Hat”

This was a voluntary portrait of a friend. The picture was taken the first day we met and he was sporting one of his wife’s hand-made alpaca hats. He looked so frail and yet his personality was so colorful, that I just had to try to capture that in this watercolor / colored pencil sketch.

“Not My Will, But..”

"Not my Will, But..."
“Not my Will, But…”

This painting was created this year in April. It is water color and graphite, with acrylic accents. I wanted to depict what it was like for Jesus in that moment of decision in the garden of Gethsemane when he had to choose God’s will or his own. It struck me how real it is that Christ actually shared in our temptations, just like the Bible claims and he never asks us to do anything he didn’t do first!

Ford Timeline Mural

This mural was painted for Wehr Ford in Mountain Grove MO. It is approximately 36 x 7 feet in dimension. It was painted all by hand. I grafted out the dimensions of each car with a grid system while working off of a mobile scaffolding. It took me about two and a half months.

Coon Hunt Mural

This painting was done on the side of a storm shelter. It took me roughly one work-week to complete. It features one of the owner’s Curr dogs, which they bred and raised for coon hunting, and one of their Rocky Mountain horses. This painting was unique in that it wrapped around the corners of the building; an attractive suggestion by the commissioners.

Trompe L’oeil Window Mural

This mural is another domestic mural, done for some friends in the Lake View area of Arkansas. This mural took me 57 hours and I enjoyed it thoroughly. All the owners knew they wanted was a trompe l’ioeil of a window with an animal peeking out. I ended up suggesting the glass bottle collection and painting their own dog looking out the window. It was a fun challenge!

Drug Store Mural, Mountain Grove

This mural was created on the side of an old drug store on the square in Mountain Grove, MO. It is about 27 feet long and 7 feet high. Though the inside of the store is no longer a drug store, the painting was composed from the recollection of old-timers memories and old photos of the outside of the building. The rest was fabricated from imagination. Completed in 2010
